Chapter 13: The sun's true position

From the sun's mean position to its true one. Subtracting the apogee gives the sun's course, and a table of corrections by course, with a method for values in between, turns the mean position into the true. The Rambam works this through for the eve of 14 Tammuz, and notes that once the true sun is known, so is the true moment of every tekufah.

The sun moves evenly about the centre of its sphere, but the earth is not at that centre. The sun's radius, carried out to the mazalot, gives its mean position; the line from the earth gives its true position. The angle between them is the correction for the course (13:2–4): subtracted until the course reaches 180°, added after it, and nothing at the apogee or opposite it. The offset is drawn larger than life; the values are from the Rambam's table.

1If you want to know the sun's true position on any day you choose, first work out its mean position for that day in the way we explained, and work out the position of the sun's apogee. Subtract the position of the apogee from the sun's mean position. The remainder is called the sun's course [its distance from the apogee].

2See how many degrees the course is. If the course is less than 180°, subtract the correction for the course from the sun's mean position.

If the course is more than 180°, up to 360, add the correction for the course to the sun's mean position. What you have after adding or subtracting is the true position.

3Know that if the course is exactly 180 or exactly 360, it has no correction; the mean position is the true position.

דוְכַמָּה הִיא מְנַת הַמַּסְלוּל? אִם יִהְיֶה הַמַּסְלוּל עֶשֶׂר מַעֲלוֹת, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ עֶשְׂרִים חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה תִּשְׁעִים מַעֲלוֹת, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחַת וְתִשְׁעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה מַעֲלוֹת, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחַת וּשְׁמוֹנָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה וְעֶשֶׂר, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחַת וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה וַחֲמִשִּׁים חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה וְעֶשְׂרִים, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחַת וַחֲמִשָּׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה וּשְׁלוֹשִׁים, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחַת וּשְׁלוֹשָׁה וּשְׁלוֹשִׁים חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה וְאַרְבָּעִים, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחַת וְתִשְׁעָה עָשָׂר חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ מַעֲלָה אַחַת וְחֵלֶק אֶחָד;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה וְשִׁשִּׁים, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ שְׁנַיִם וְאַרְבָּעִים חֲלָקִים;

וְאִם יִהְיֶה מֵאָה וְשִׁבְעִים, תִּהְיֶה מְנָתוֹ אֶחָד וְעֶשְׂרִים חֲלָקִים;

4How much is the correction for the course?

140°1°19'
150°1°1'
160°42'
170°21'

If the course is exactly 180°, it has no correction, as we explained; the sun's mean position is its true position.

5If the course is more than 180°, subtract it from 360° and find its correction. For example: the course is 200°. Subtract it from 360 and 160° remain. We already gave the correction for 160° as 42', so the correction for 200 is also 42'.

subtractunder 180°addover 180°the apogee · 0° · no correction180° · no correction (13:3)160°200°both 42' (13:5)
The course is counted round from the apogee. Under 180° the correction is subtracted, over 180° it is added (13:2). A course of 200° is 160° from the apogee the other way round, 360 − 200, so it has the same correction as 160° (13:5).

6Likewise, if the course is 300°, subtract it from 360 and 60 remain. You already know that the correction for 60° is 1°41', and so that is also the correction for 300°. Do the same with every value.

7Say the course is 65°. We already know that the correction for 60 is 1°41', and the correction for 70 is 1°51'. The difference between the two corrections is 10', which comes to one minute for each degree. So the correction for a course of 65 is 1°46'.

8Likewise, if the course were 67, its correction would be 1°48'.

Do the same with every course whose value has units as well as tens, whether in the calculation of the sun or in the other calculations of the moon.

The correction tables of Kiddush HaChodesh 13:4, 15:6 and 16:11Three humps against the course in degrees: the sun's correction, rising to 1°59' near 90°; the moon's, rising to 5°8' near 100°; and the moon's latitude, rising to exactly 5° at 90°. Each is zero at 0° and 180°.
Each table gives a value every ten degrees of the course; between rows the Rambam takes a share of the difference (13:7), which is a straight line between the dots. All three rise from nothing at 0° to a peak near the quarter and fall to nothing at 180° — for the sun to 1°59', the moon 5°8', the latitude 5°. Past 180° each is read again from the far side (13:5, 15:7, 16:14).

9For example: we want to know the sun's true position at the beginning of the night of Shabbat, the fourteenth of Tammuz of this year. First work out the sun's mean position for that time; it is 105°37'25", as we explained. Then work out the position of the sun's apogee for that time; it comes out 26°45'23" [of Gemini, that is, 86°45'23" from the start of Aries]. Subtract the position of the apogee from the mean position, and the course comes out 18°52'2".

With any course, do not be particular about the minutes. If they are less than thirty, ignore them. If they are thirty or more, count them as one degree and add it to the degrees of the course.

So this course is 19°, and by the method we explained its correction is 38'.

10Since this course is less than 180, subtract the correction, 38', from the sun's mean position. That leaves 104°59'25".

So the sun's true position at the beginning of this night is in Cancer, at 15° into it, less a few seconds.

Do not pay attention to the seconds at all, not in the sun's position, not in the moon's position, and not in the other calculations of the sighting. Consider only the minutes. If the seconds come close to thirty, make them a minute and add it to the minutes.

11Once you know the sun's position at any time you want, you can find the day of the true tekufah for any tekufah you want, whether tekufos that come after this epoch we started from or tekufos of years long past.
