Chapter 16: The moon's latitude
The moon's latitude, its distance north or south of the sun's path. The Rambam describes the moon's tilted circle and the two points where it crosses the sun's, the head and the tail, which drift backward through the zodiac. He gives the head's motion and position at the epoch, how to tell whether the moon is north or south of the sun, and the table for the size of its latitude, with a worked example for the eve of 2 Iyar.

1The circle in which the moon always travels is tilted from the circle in which the sun always travels: half of it tilts to the north and half to the south. It has two points, opposite each other, where the two circles meet.
So when the moon is at one of these two points, it is traveling in the sun's circle, exactly in line with the sun. When the moon moves away from one of the two points, it is traveling north or south of the sun. The point from which the moon begins to tilt north of the sun is called the head. The point from which the moon begins to tilt south of the sun is called the tail. This head has a uniform motion, with no increase or decrease. It moves backward through the signs, from Aries to Pisces to Aquarius, and it keeps revolving this way always.
2The head's mean motion in one day is 3'11". So its motion is:
| Days | Remainder |
|---|---|
| 10 | 31'47" |
| 100 | 5°17'43" |
| 1,000 | 52°57'10" |
| 10,000 | 169°31'40" |
| 29 | 1°32'9" |
| 354 (a regular year) | 18°44'42" |
The head's mean position at the beginning of the night of Thursday, which is the epoch, was 180°57'28".
3If you want to know the position of the head at any time you choose, work out its mean position for that time the same way you work out the mean positions of the sun and the moon, and subtract the mean position from 360°. The remainder is the position of the head at that time. The tail is always directly opposite it.
4For example: we want to know the position of the head at the beginning of the night of Friday whose day is the second of Iyar of this year, the year of the epoch. The number of whole days from the beginning of the epoch night to the beginning of this night, for which we want the head's position, is 29.
5Work out the head's mean position for this time by the method you know: add its motion for 29 days to the epoch. The head's mean position comes to 182°29'37". Subtract this mean position from 360, and you are left with 177°30'23". This is the position of the head; ignore the seconds. So the head is at 27°30' of Virgo, and the tail, opposite it, is at 27°30' of Pisces.
6There is always exactly half the sphere between the head and the tail. So whatever sign you find the head in, the tail will be in the seventh sign from it, at exactly the same number of degrees and minutes. If the head is at 10° of a certain sign, the tail will be at 10° of the seventh sign from it.
7Once you know the position of the head, the position of the tail, and the moon's true position, look at all three. If you find the moon with the head or with the tail, at the same degree and minute, you know the moon is tilted neither north nor south of the sun. If you see that the moon's position is past the head and it is heading toward the tail, you know the moon is tilted north of the sun. If the moon is past the tail and heading toward the head, you know the moon is tilted south of the sun.
8The amount by which the moon tilts north or south of the sun is called the latitude of the moon. If it tilts to the north it is called northern latitude, and if it tilts to the south, southern latitude. If the moon is at one of the two points, it has no latitude, as we explained.
9The moon's latitude is never more than 5°, whether north or south. This is how it goes: it starts from the head and moves away from it little by little, the distance growing until it reaches 5°. Then it comes back closer little by little, until it has no latitude when it reaches the tail.
Then it moves away again little by little, the distance growing until it reaches 5°, and comes back closer again until it has no latitude.
10If you want to know how much the moon's latitude is at any time you choose, and whether it is north or south, work out the position of the head and the moon's true position for that time, and subtract the position of the head from the moon's true position. The remainder is called the course of the latitude.
If the course of the latitude is from 1° to 180, you know the moon's latitude is northern. If the course is more than 180, you know the moon's latitude is southern. If it is exactly 180 or exactly 360, the moon has no latitude at all.
Then find the correction for the course of the latitude. That is the amount it tilts north or south, and it is what is called the southern or northern latitude of the moon, as we explained.
11How much is the correction for the course of the latitude?
| Course of the latitude | Correction |
|---|---|
| 10° | 52' |
| 20° | 1°43' |
| 30° | 2°30' |
| 40° | 3°13' |
| 50° | 3°50' |
| 60° | 4°20' |
| 70° | 4°42' |
| 80° | 4°55' |
| 90° | 5° |
12If there are units along with the tens, take their proper share according to the difference between the two corrections, as you did for the sun's course and the moon's course. For example: the course of the latitude is 53°. You already know that if the course were 50, its correction would be 3°50', and if the course were 60, its correction would be 4°20'. The difference between the two corrections is 30', which is 3' for each degree. So by this reckoning, the correction for this course of 53 is 3°59'. Do the same with every value.
13Once you know the correction for the course of the latitude up to ninety, as we taught you, you know the correction for every value of the course. If the course is more than ninety, up to 180, subtract the course from 180 and find the correction from the remainder.
14Likewise, if the course is more than 180, up to 270, subtract 180 from it and find the correction from the remainder.
15If the course is more than 270, up to 360, subtract it from 360 and find the correction from the remainder.
16For example: the course is 150. Subtract it from 180, and 30 remain. You already know that the correction for 30 is 2°30', and so the correction for 150 is also 2°30'.
17Say the course is 200. Subtract 180 from it, and 20 remain. You already know that the correction for 20 is 1°43', and so the correction for 200 is also 1°43'.

18Say the course is 300. Subtract it from 360, and 60 remain. You already know that the correction for 60 is 4°20', and so the correction for 300 is also 4°20'. Do the same with every value.

19Say we want to know how much the moon's latitude is, and in which direction, north or south, at the beginning of the night of Friday, the second of Iyar of this year. You already know that the moon's true position on this night was 18°40' of Taurus. The position of the head at that time was 27°30' of Virgo. Subtract the position of the head from the position of the moon, and the course of the latitude comes out 231°10'. [Treat it as 231,] since the minutes are not taken into account in any course. By the methods we explained in this chapter, the correction for this course is 3°53'. That is the moon's latitude at the beginning of this night, and it is southern, since the course is more than 180.
