Chapter 6: The molad

Chapter 6 begins the fixed calendar. The Rambam explains that the molad is the conjunction of the sun and moon by their mean motion only, sets out the units it is counted in, and gives the remainders of a month, a year and a nineteen-year cycle once whole weeks are cast out. From the first molad, BaHaRaD, these give the molad of any year or month, past or to come.

The molad's place in the week

Only the molad's place in the week matters, so whole weeks are cast out at every step (6:9). The molad of a year is found from BaHaRaD, the remainders of the cycles and of the years since, and each month after it is 1 day, 12 hours and 793 parts later in the week than the one before (6:6, 6:14–15).

1When the months were fixed by sighting, the court would calculate and know the time at which the moon joins the sun with great precision, the way the astronomers do, in order to know whether the moon would be seen or not.

The first stage of that calculation is an approximate one, which gives the time of their conjunction without precision.

The time of their conjunction reckoned without precision, by their mean motion only, is what is called the molad.

The principles of the calculation used when there is no court to fix the months by sighting, which is the calculation we use today, are what is called ibbur [intercalation]. They are these:

2A day and night is always twenty-four hours: twelve in the day and twelve in the night.

The hour is divided into 1080 parts. They divided the hour into this number because it has a half, a quarter, an eighth, a third, a sixth, a ninth, a fifth and a tenth, and each of these is many parts.

3From the time the moon and the sun join by this calculation until they join a second time by their mean motion is twenty-nine days, twelve hours of the thirtieth day counted from the start of its night, and 793 parts of the thirteenth hour (29:12:793). This is the time from one molad to the next, and this is the lunar month.

4A lunar year of twelve of these months comes to 354 days, 8 hours and 876 parts (354:8:876). If it is a leap year of thirteen months, it comes to 383 days, 21 hours and 589 parts (383:21:589). The solar year is 365 days and 6 hours.

So the solar year is longer than the lunar year by 10 days, 21 hours and 204 parts (10:21:204).

5When you cast out the days of a lunar month in sevens, the days of the week, there remain 1 day, 12 hours and 793 parts (1:12:793). This is the remainder of a lunar month.

Likewise when you cast out the days of a lunar year in sevens: if it is an ordinary year, there remain 4 days, 8 hours and 876 parts (4:8:876), and this is the remainder of an ordinary year. If it is a leap year, its remainder is 5 days, 21 hours and 589 parts (5:21:589).

6When you know the molad of any month and add 1:12:793 to it, the result is the molad of the month after it, and you will know on which day of the week, at what hour and at how many parts it will be.

7For example: the molad of Nisan was on Sunday, 5 hours into the day and 107 parts (1:5:107) [5 hours into the day is 17 hours from the start of the night, so in full 1:17:107]. Add the remainder of a lunar month, 1:12:793, and the molad of Iyar comes out on the night of Tuesday [the night that opens Tuesday], 5 hours into the night and 900 parts (3:5:900). And so on, month after month, to the end of the world.

8Likewise, when you know the molad of this year and add its remainder to it (the remainder of an ordinary year if it is ordinary, of a leap year if it is a leap year), the result is the molad of the year after it. And so year after year, to the end of the world.

The first molad from which you begin is the molad of the first year of creation. It was on the night of Monday, 5 hours into the night and 204 parts (2:5:204) [known as BaHaRaD, from the Hebrew letters of these numbers]. The calculation begins from it.

9In all these calculations by which you find the molad, when you add remainder to remainder: when the parts come to 1080, make them one hour and add it to the hours; when the hours come to twenty-four, make them one day and add it to the days; and when the days come to more than seven, cast out seven and keep what is left. For we do not calculate to know the number of days, only on which day of the week, at what hour and at what part the molad will be.

10Every nineteen years, of which seven are leap years and twelve ordinary, is called a machzor [cycle].

Why did we rely on this number? Because when you add up the days of twelve ordinary years and seven leap years with their hours and parts, making every 1080 parts an hour and every twenty-four hours a day and adding them to the days, you find the whole comes to nineteen solar years, each of them 365 days and 6 hours, on average.

In all these nineteen years, all that is left over of the days of the sun is 1 hour and 485 parts (0:1:485).

0102030days ahead36811141719years of the cycle · leap years marked1 hour 485 parts left
Shmuel's year of 365¼ days runs about 11 days ahead of twelve lunar months every year. Each of the cycle's seven leap months takes a month back, and after nineteen years only 1 hour and 485 parts are left over (6:10).

11So in a cycle like this, the months are all lunar months and the years are solar years. By this calculation the seven leap years of every cycle are years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17 and 19 of the cycle.

12When you add up the remainder of each of the twelve ordinary years, 4:8:876, and the remainder of each of the seven leap years, 5:21:589, and cast it all out in sevens, there remain 2 days, 16 hours and 595 parts (2:16:595). This is the remainder of the cycle.

13When you know the molad of the start of a cycle and add 2:16:595 to it, the result is the molad of the start of the cycle after it. And so the molad of every cycle, to the end of the world.

We have already said that the molad of the start of the first cycle was 2:5:204. The molad of a year is the molad of Tishrei of that year.

14In this way you can know the molad of any year you want, and the molad of any month you want, of years that have passed or years yet to come.

How? Take the years of creation that have passed and been completed, and make them into cycles of nineteen. Find the number of cycles that have passed, and the number of years that have passed of the cycle not yet complete. Take 2:16:595 for each cycle, 4:8:876 for each ordinary year of the incomplete cycle, and 5:21:589 for each leap year. Add it all up [counting on from the first molad, 2:5:204]: make the parts into hours and the hours into days, and cast the days out in sevens. What is left of the days, hours and parts is the molad of the coming year whose molad you want to know.

15The molad of the year found by this calculation is the molad of Rosh Chodesh Tishrei. Add 1:12:793 to it and the result is the molad of Marcheshvan; add 1:12:793 to the molad of Marcheshvan and the result is the molad of Kislev; and so for every month, one after the other, to the end of the world.
