Chapter 9: The seasons at 365¼ days
This chapter begins the calculation of the tekufos, the four seasons of the solar year, using the year of 365 and a quarter days. The Rambam defines each tekufah by the sun's entry into Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, and gives the first tekufah of creation. He then shows how to find any tekufah: its moment from the nineteen-year cycle, its weekday and hour from a 28-year cycle, and the day of the month it falls on, each with a worked example.
1The solar year: some of the Sages of Israel say it is 365 and a quarter days, a quarter day being six hours. Others among them say it is less than a quarter day. The sages of Greece and Persia likewise disagree about this.
2According to the one who says it is 365 and a quarter days, there is a remainder of one hour and 485 parts (0:1:485) from each nineteen-year cycle, as we said. The interval from one tekufah [season, the moment the sun enters a quarter of its circuit] to the next is 91 days and seven and a half hours (91:7:540). Once you know the day and hour of one tekufah, count from it to the second tekufah after it, and from the second to the third, until the end of the world.
3The tekufah of Nisan is the hour and part in which the sun enters the beginning of the sign of Aries. The tekufah of Tammuz is when the sun is at the head of Cancer; the tekufah of Tishrei, when the sun is at the head of Libra; the tekufah of Teves, when the sun is at the head of Capricorn.
Under this calculation, the tekufah of Nisan in the first year of creation came 7 days, 9 hours and 642 parts (7:9:642) before the molad of Nisan.
4This is how to calculate the tekufah. First find how many complete cycles there are from the year of creation up to the cycle you want. For each of those cycles take one hour and 485 parts (0:1:485). Gather all the parts into hours and all the hours into days, and subtract from the total 7 days, 9 hours and 642 parts (7:9:642). Add what remains to the molad of Nisan of the first year of the cycle. That gives you the hour and the day of the month of the tekufah of Nisan in the first year of that cycle. From it, count 91 days and seven and a half hours for each tekufah after it.
If you want to know the tekufah of Nisan of this year, which is such-and-such a year in the cycle you are in: take one hour and 485 parts (0:1:485) for each complete cycle, and 10 days, 21 hours and 204 parts (10:21:204) for each complete year that has passed in the current cycle. Add it all up and subtract 7 days, 9 hours and 642 parts (7:9:642). Cast out what remains in lunar months of 29 days, 12 hours and 793 parts (29:12:793). Add whatever is left, less than a lunar month, to the molad of Nisan of that year, and you will know when the tekufah of Nisan of that year falls: on which day of the month and at which hour.
Under this calculation, the tekufah of Nisan always falls either at the beginning of the night, at midnight, at the beginning of the day, or at midday. The tekufah of Tammuz always falls either at seven and a half hours or at one and a half hours, of the day or of the night. The tekufah of Tishrei always falls either at nine hours or at three hours, of the day or of the night. The tekufah of Teves always falls either at ten and a half hours or at four and a half hours, of the day or of the night.
If you want to know on which day of the week and at which hour the tekufah will be, take the complete years that have passed from the year of creation up to the year you want and cast them all out in 28s. For each of the years that remain, fewer than 28, take one day and six hours. Add it all up, add 3 to it, and cast it all out in 7s. Count the days and hours that remain from the beginning of the night of Sunday [nightfall on Saturday]; wherever the count reaches, that is the tekufah of Nisan. Why add 3? Because the first tekufah of the year of creation was at the beginning of the night of Wednesday.
5For example: we want to know the tekufah of Nisan of the year 4930 from creation. When you cast it all out in 28s, one year remains. Take one day and six hours for it and add 3. The tekufah of Nisan falls on the night of Thursday [the night that opens Thursday], six hours into the night. Add seven and a half hours: the tekufah of Tammuz is at one and a half hours into Thursday's daytime. Add seven and a half hours: the tekufah of Tishrei is at nine hours into Thursday's daytime. Add seven and a half hours: the tekufah of Teves is at four and a half hours into the night of Friday. Add seven and a half hours: the next tekufah of Nisan is at the beginning of Friday's daytime. Continue this way, tekufah after tekufah, until the end of the world.
6If you want to know on which day of the month the tekufah of Nisan of this year will fall: first find on which weekday it falls, on which weekday Nisan of this year is fixed, and how many complete years of the cycle have passed. Take eleven days for each year, and in our times add seven days to the total. Cast it all out in 30s, and count the remainder, less than thirty, from Rosh Chodesh Nisan. If the count lands on the weekday of the tekufah, good. If not, add one, two or three days to the count until it reaches the day of the tekufah. If the year is a leap year, start counting from Rosh Chodesh of the second Adar. The tekufah falls on whatever day of the month the count reaches.
7For example: we want to know on which day of the month the tekufah of Nisan will fall in the year 4930, which is the ninth year of the 260th cycle. We find that Rosh Chodesh Nisan is fixed on Thursday that year, and the tekufah of Nisan is on Thursday. Since this is the ninth year of the cycle, the complete years are eight. Taking eleven days for each, the days total 88. Add seven: 95 in all. Cast it all out in 30s: five days remain. Counting five days from Rosh Chodesh Nisan, which was Thursday, the count reaches Monday. But we already know the tekufah is not on Monday but on Thursday, so add one day after another until you reach Thursday, the day of the tekufah. The tekufah of Nisan this year is on the eighth of Nisan. Do the same for every year.
8As for what we said, to add one day after another until you reach the day of the tekufah: you will never need to add more than one, two or three days. It would be a great wonder if you needed to add four. If you find you need to add more than that, know that you made a mistake in the calculation, and go back and calculate carefully.
